Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet

Only 528 were built, boasting 250 hp and a top speed of 260 km/h: the Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet was the rare finale to the transaxle series and one of the fastest open-top four-cylinder cars of its time. Our example in Alpine White with black leather, with matching numbers and first delivery in Switzerland, joined our collection in 2003 (from Geneva) – making it the vehicle that has been with us the longest. Since then, it has been serviced without interruption at the Porsche Centre in St. Moritz.

Porsche 944 Turbo Cabriolet

From the Le Mans test bench to series production: the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine in  the 944 is technically based on the halved 928 V8. Before it went into mass production,  Porsche tested the concept in 1981 at Le Mans in the 924 GTP under the toughest  conditions – practically a baptism of fire for the later 944 engine. It was not until the 944  Turbo (from 1985) and the Turbo S (from 1988 with 250 hp) that full performance was  brought into series production; from 1991, the convertible also received the 250 hp  engine.

The Cabriolet – an exclusive finale

The 944 Turbo Cabriolet was only produced for one model year and only 528 units were  made – a hand-picked conclusion to the series. Technically, it corresponds to the Turbo  S: 250 hp, 350 Nm, five-speed manual transmission, and transaxle layout with almost  50:50 weight distribution. Factory specifications state a top speed of 260 km/h and  around 5.9 seconds from 0–100 km/h; comparable values were measured in tests.

Our model

Delivered on 23 April 1992 via AMAG Switzerland, with factory hardtop, air conditioning,  electrically adjustable comfort seats (with seat heating), and matching numbers  (Porsche certificate). Documented mileage: 60,700 km at the time of purchase in 2003,  80,900 km (2016), 91,480 km (2024). The car has been regularly and comprehensively  serviced by us for over two decades – with invoices amounting to many thousands of  Swiss francs, mainly at the Porsche Centre in St. Moritz.

Conclusion – The crowning glory of the transaxle era

The 944 Turbo Cabriolet combines everyday practicality and engineering clarity with  genuine high performance: a very rare, substantial top-of-the-range model from the  transaxle generation – elegant, robust, and still fast today. Our example is a prime  example of this: Swiss origin, matching numbers, very well-maintained original  condition, and an integral part of our collection since 2003.
