In 1973, the Alfa Romeo sets itself apart by claiming exclusivity and making a great step forward in their technical level. This Alfetta GVT was built as the strongest version of the series and its characteristic exterior is both a typical Alfa but clearly distinguishable, without having it confused with other models, while it gives one a feeling of being totally customized. The series I was in production for only four years (1974-1980 which corresponds to a very limited number of copies. Among GVT fans it is known as the last sports car of the Old-Schoolers.
A pronounced magazine auto, motor and sport compared the Alfetta GTV with the then new BMW 520 I as a text of durability, speed and comfort. In this comparative test was Alfa clearly the clear winner. The Altetta coupe was also used as police car by the Italian Carabinieri, as well as by Polizia di Stato. The Alfetta limousine was also the official escort car of the former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro, who was later kidnapped in the very car on Via Fani in Rome, but the Italian Red Brigades or Brigate Rosse. He was held for months a later murdered, but the account of these events lived on in a fictionalized production in a critically well regarded Italian film The Advocate, which also heavily featured Alfettas of all types, from Carabinieri “short nose-round light” trough to the Primes Minister’s own “long nose-square light” 2000. Alfa Romeo’s fascinating bodywork has been sketched by the famous Italian designer Giorgio Giugiaro, who’s creative work has also given us the design-classics like Lotus Esprit, Fiat Panda, Fiat Uno, Lancia Delta, VW Golf I and Audi 80. His work inspired numerous developments and new ideas that were unthinkable at the time for example the combination of an extremely leveled and low front with a voluminous rear which serves the aerodynamics, but on the other hand offers a place for four and a relatively spatial boot. As well as the accommodation of the windshield wipers in the gap between the hood and windshield, was considered as a new idea that then stayed. Due to the GTV’s De Dion rear axle, the vehicle has a relative steady weight distribution; the engine is in front, but the gear and the coupling, are in the rear axle in a common case or trans-axle.
This four cylinder, 5-speed gear of the coupé-icon provides for an unexpected and striking road performance. There wasn’t a car with Alfa’s speed in the 70s, that was as comfortable to sit and drive in as the Alfetta is. In the comparison test, made by the auto, motor und sport magazine delivered the BMW, indeed, 130 HP, however it is clear that the Alfa must exert itself less. The reason lies with about 200 kilograms less weight and with the unbreakable transmission with which you will be as light as a ghost driving in between cars. In 2016 this car was completely restored by Ronal Felgen. It has been varnished and the inside shell was treated with Fertan, therefore it is also protected against rust and in a newly cultivate state. This lively GTV is a real athlete on his contemporary light alloy wheels and a rare color combination. Sportiness and design are by the Alfetta of the uppermost stage, but the sophisticated work and love put into this car results in astonishing comfort and great speed. With this true "la meccanica della emozioni” you will become the envy every distinctive collector.
The GTV became a favorite among racing enthusiasts and was even used in various motorsport events, showcasing its performance capabilities. As my father and I used it to participate in quite a few rallies like the Passione Engadinas throughout the years, it inspired interest in our friends and next year we had three families begging to test it out themselves, before some of them bought their own.
Over the years, the GTV has garnered a dedicated following, with many enthusiasts restoring and preserving these classic cars. The GTV Alfetta has become a symbol of Italian automotive passion, representing a time when cars were built with a focus on driving enjoyment rather than merely meeting specifications.
