The 1970 Porsche 911 S 2.2 exemplifies the pure unadulterated sports car culture of the early 1970s. With its 180 hp six-cylinder boxer engine, precise five-speed gearbox, and unmistakable sound, it is considered a milestone of an era in which lightness and intuition were more important than electronics. Our model – first delivered in Switzerland in blood orange with a black leather interior – is in excellent condition, having been completely refurbished both technically and visually, and has Swiss veteran status.
The 2.2 S was the top model of the first large 911 generation and marked the transition from the 2.0-litre to the 2.4-litre engine. With 180 hp, 7,200 rpm, and a kerb weight of just under a tonne, it offered performance that surprised even seasoned V12 sports cars at the time. Its engine with mechanical fuel injection was known for its spontaneity – Walter Röhrl once described the early 911 as ‘the most honest car you can drive – it shows you immediately whether you can do it or not.’
This car was first registered on 28 March 1970 and added to our collection in 2018. In the years prior to this, it underwent a comprehensive technical overhaul: the engine was reconditioned, cylinders and gaskets replaced, and the brake system, heat exchanger, and numerous attachments renewed. The bodywork is immaculate, rust-free, and painted in period-correct colours. Numerous receipts and invoices document the work, which amounts to a total value of several tens of thousands of Swiss francs.
The coupé features the original Fuchs rims that give the 911 S its iconic profile. The colour combination of blood orange and black leather emphasises the individuality of the early 1970s, when Porsche continued to combine functionality and emotion without compromise. Inside, the delicate three-spoke steering wheel, classic round instruments, and characteristic ‘gate’ gearshift – a cockpit that does not distract but focuses.
The 911 S 2.2 is pure, analogue, and demanding – but that is precisely what makes it so fascinating. Every steering movement, every gear change conveys direct, mechanical feedback. It is a car that does not want to be driven but rather wants to live and breathe with the driver. No other model in the history of the 911 combines lightness, precision, and the uncompromising honesty that still defines the brand's DNA today.
This 911 S 2.2 is a perfectly preserved example of the legendary F series – technically state-of-the-art, true to the original, but with the liveliness that only an air-cooled Porsche possesses. Its balanced blend of history, authenticity, and revised perfection makes it one of the most desirable classics of its generation – a drivable piece of Porsche history that brings the essence of the 911 to life.
