Saab 900 Turbo 16S Cabriolet "Monte Carlo"

The Saab 900 Turbo Cabriolet is one of the most distinctive open-top cars of its era. Its Monte Carlo Yellow paintwork gives it an unmistakable presence – and made it an automotive icon even during its lifetime. Our example, a limited ‘Monte Carlo Edition’ with initial registration in May 1992 (US version), has been in our collection since 2025.

Saab 900 Turbo 16S Cabriolet "Monte Carlo"

From the mid-1980s onwards, the Saab 900 Cabriolet combined Nordic engineering  with everyday practicality and a clear, functional design language. The turbo version  really brought out its strengths: powerful acceleration, relaxed long-distance qualities,  and the solidity typical of Saab. With its 2.0-litre 16V turbo engine (1,985 cm3, 188 hp)  and APC (Automatic Performance Control) system, it was technically at the top of its  class.

The Monte Carlo Edition

In 1991, Saab launched an exclusive special edition of the 900 Turbo 16S convertible –  the Monte Carlo Edition, named after the bright paint colour Monte Carlo Yellow. It was  limited to 493 units worldwide (around 300 for Europe, 193 for North America) and  marked the final highlight of the first convertible generation. The Monte Carlo paint was  reserved exclusively for this series – only these 493 vehicles left the factory in yellow. In  addition to the special colour, the model was given a black soft top, grey leather  upholstery with yellow stitching, special emblems, and extensive equipment – a perfect  balance between understatement and extroverted elegance.

Our example

Our car was first registered in May 1992 and was last traded in Germany before joining  our collection in 2025. It is the US version with the 1,985 cc turbo engine and all the  characteristic details of the Monte Carlo Edition. The paintwork and interior are in  exceptionally good original condition; the black soft top and aluminium wheels form a harmonious combination typical of the period. With its smooth running, linear power  delivery, and high build quality, it still embodies the engineering culture for which Saab  was so highly regarded.

Conclusion – A yellow statement of an era

The Saab 900 Turbo Cabriolet ‘Monte Carlo’ was never just a fashion accessory. It was  a statement – for independence, design awareness, and technical rationality. The rare  special edition with 188 hp, of which only 493 were built, is now one of the most  sought-after models in the 900 series and a symbol of a time when individuality still took  precedence over conformity. Our model preserves this spirit – bright, honest, and  unmistakable.
